Undercard: a platform to build community around fitness and give independent trainers the ability prosper financially

overview, essentially

Giving fitness trainers the power to be independent, and profitable 💪🏽

Did you know that most gyms in the fitness industry only pay their trainers around 25% of the revenue they actually generate? Many trainers end up working more hours at these gyms than physically possible just to make a decent salary. The cofounders of Undercard saw this issue and believed there could be better a way for trainers to maximize their profits and time, all while providing quality classes and instruction to clients.

I was asked to lead the user experience design of Undercard’s trainer onboarding, group class creation, and client sign-up flows. I conducted research with both trainers and frequent group class attendees, created user maps, and designed Undercard‘s high fidelity wireframes that were ready to be developed.

user flow

Distilling requirements into desirable user flows

Taking a look at apps that allow you to create a class or event (e.g., Eventbrite) and apps that allow you to join fitness classes (e.g., Obé, EQX+), I pulled together specific requirements for each flow to inform our wireframe designs.

Giving trainers everything they need to set up their own group classes ( both virtual and in-person)

Allowing clients to easily sign up for a class without having to download the app or create a profile

Making it super easy for trainers to onboard onto the platform fast, so that they can start training right away

that’s a wrap

Undercard launched in 2020 in certain markets and rebranded to Recess in 2021. Figuring out product requirements from an idea through user interviews and research was an amazing experience and taught me a lot about not being afraid to get into the work to figure things out.
